Main Idea: The church is responsible for upholding God’s standard for leadership by appropriately honoring its faithful elders, righteously disciplining those who sin, and carefully appointing qualified men, all done with partiality.
- Honor Faithful Elders
- I Timothy 5:17-18
- Elders who “rule well” (lead effectively and diligently) are worthy of “double honor”, which encompasses both high respect and fair financial support.
- Paul reinforces this with Old Testament and New Testament principles: You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain (Deut. 25:4). The laborer deserves his wages (Luke 10:7).
- Application: Pray regularly for your elders and their families. Express appreciation and encouragement for their hard work in preaching and teaching the Word. Provide adequate compensation so they can focus fully on ministry.
- Righteously Discipline Sinning Elders
- I Timothy 5:19-21
- While elders are due protection from false accusations, proven sin must be addressed impartially to maintain the church’s purity and serve as a warning to others.
- Accusations must be established by two or three witnesses to ensure fairness (Deut. 19:15).
- Those who persist in sin after an investigation should be publicly rebuked.
- Application: Do not entertain gossip or slander against leaders, but insist on multiple witnesses and due process. Support the difficult process of church discipline when necessary for the health and integrity of the congregation.
- Carefully Appoint Qualified Men
- I Timothy 5:22-25
- Discernment and patience are crucial in selecting new leaders to avoid prematurely endorsing someone unqualified.
- A person’s character and conduct become clear over time.
- Application: Take time to observe character and fruit in potential leaders’ lives before appointment. Exercise patience in the selection process, trusting that both good and bad works will eventually be revealed.
