God’s Design for Men and Women
1 Timothy 2:8
- Paul directs men “everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or disputing” (v. 8). What specific behavior is Paul addressing here?
- Why do you think Paul specifically addresses the issues of “anger” and “disputing” for men? What might have been happening in the church in Ephesus?
- How can men apply this instruction to pray without anger or disputing today, both within and outside the church?
Instructions for Women
1 Timothy 2:9-10
- Paul tells women to adorn themselves with “modest apparel, with decency and propriety” and “with good works” rather than with “braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire” (vv. 9–10). What do you think is the universal, timeless principle behind these instructions on dress?
- What does it mean to adorn oneself “with good works”? How does Paul contrast this internal adornment with external finery?
Learning and Leadership
1 Timothy 2:11-12
- Paul states, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission” (v. 11). What do you think “quietness” means in this context? Is it a command for absolute silence, or does it refer to a quiet and submissive attitude? (Hint: compare the use of “quiet” in v. 2)
- Paul writes, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet” (v. 12). Why is this verse so debated today, and what different interpretations have you heard?
- What can we learn from this passage about the importance of sound doctrine and order in worship, regardless of one’s specific interpretation of gender roles?
Creation and the Fall
1 Timothy 2:13-14
- Paul mentions that “Adam was formed first, then Eve” (v. 13). How does the order of creation relate to the instructions Paul has just given?
- Why does Paul bring up Eve’s deception and transgression in verse 14? What does this reference imply about the situation in Ephesus?
Salvation and Childbearing
1 Timothy 2:15
- Verse 15 is one of the most difficult passages to interpret: “But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness, with self-control.” What are some possible interpretations of this verse?
- How can we reconcile this verse with the clear biblical teaching that salvation is by grace through faith alone?
Integration and Modern Application
- What is the relationship between the instructions given to men in verse 8 and the instructions given to women in verses 9–12? How do they work together to create order and peace in the church?
- How can we engage in a productive and respectful discussion about gender roles in the church today, given the diverse cultural and theological perspectives?
- What principles from this passage can both men and women apply to their lives, regardless of how they interpret the specific commands?
